Day in the Life of a Remote Maternal Health Nurse

Not all remote nursing jobs are cut and dry, and this role is a perfect example of that. This role is from a smaller company that has nurses performing the duties of case managers and triage nurses, so every day looks a little different. 

See how one Southeast nurse in the United States landed her remote nursing job and how she spends her time during the day.

1. What is your nursing background?

Southeast nurse worked for about two and a half years in women’s health areas, including:

  • Postpartum
  • Labor and delivery
  • NICU

Though she only had a few years under her belt, she had experience working for one of the largest women’s hospitals in her state. 

2. Why did you pursue a remote nursing role?

Two years into her career, she was working a few PRN jobs as well as the night shift. “It was killing me,” she remembers. She decided to pursue a change and some supplementary income.

She discovered remote nursing job resources online, like the Nurse Fern group, and started to learn more. 

3. What was the process to get your current role?

Southeast nurse’s timeline is comparable to the industry standard of about two months for starting a new job after receiving an interview.

The timeline went like this:

  • Month one: She started casually looking for remote nursing jobs. “I wasn’t desperate for just anything,” she says. She wanted a work-from-home job in the OB field specifically.
  • Month two: Southeast nurse became more serious about her job search but still wasn’t securing any interviews. She bought the Nurse Fern template and almost immediately landed three interviews.
  • Month three: She was hired for her current position.
  • Month four: She started her new position.

Though Southeast nurse recognizes she only had a few years of clinical experience, she emphasized and leveraged that her experience was with high-risk patient populations in her interviews. 

4. What is the job like?

The company is a virtual maternity care service, which offers 24/7 assistance for pregnant and postpartum moms and their newborns for up to one year of life. Her compensation is between $65,000 and $75,000.

5. What does a typical day look like for you?

She explains that her team has rotating shifts. The shifts include:

  • One main shift of typical business hours
  • One afternoon shift that goes until the evening
  • One overnight shift
  • A weekend shift every couple of months

The workflow is different depending on the shift, but their primary objective is to manage their patient panels, performing tasks like:

  • Answering patient messages
  • Triaging patient symptoms
  • Case management tasks, like checking in on a patient to see how they’re doing and if they are connected to available resources

The overnight shift only manages incoming triage calls, while the day and afternoon shifts will take triage calls and manage other tasks in between. Southeast nurse says there are also some company meetings throughout the day, usually in the early afternoon.

6. Is your work flexible?

Southeast nurse shares a few aspects of her remote nursing job that provide some flexibility:

  • Unlimited PTO. Southeast nurse says she hasn’t had any issues with getting her PTO approved. If requests are piling up for a particular day, her supervisors will eventually close requests for that day. She has never heard of someone getting their PTO denied or someone accused of abusing their PTO.
  • Limited overtime. There are times Southeast nurse’s team has to stay late, but those times are few and far between.
  • Paid salary, not hourly. This allows Southeast nurse to flex time, stay later, or start earlier as needed.
  • Nomad privileges. Southeast nurse says their team lives all over the US, and anyone can travel around the country as long as they follow HIPAA regulations and their company security policies.
  • Attainable metrics. The company tracks metrics as a whole, but Southeast nurse says her company is not punitive if anyone is struggling to perform. On the contrary, if a nurse is slow, they will do their best to provide relief. 

Pro tip: Unless specifically in your employment contract, some of these flexibility perks are subject to change. As companies grow, get funding, track data, and gain or lose revenue, these aspects may shift over time. Be sure to consider the overall compensation package when accepting a job offer.

7. Which aspects of your work lead to burnout, and which parts are refreshing?

The most burnout-inducing aspect of her work is when the company is stretched thin with their coverage, then the workload increases on their nurses. Also, if there is an issue with a pregnancy or with a newborn, that can be hard on the team. 

The most refreshing part of her job? “The flexibility allows me to maintain a work-life balance,” Southeast nurse shares. In her spare time, she likes to read, take her dog for walks, and play video games.

Southeast nurse shares her biggest advice to any nurses who want to follow her path and land a remote nursing job is to leverage LinkedIn. When doing so, she encourages nurses to apply to jobs they’re interested in, even if they don’t meet the requirements. Her job posting required more experience, but she still landed the role.
